This
website is a project for the Theater 162 (Asian Theater) class under Dr. Amihan
Bonifacio-Ramolete of the Department of Speech Communication and Theater Arts. At
the end of the semester, the students of the class have become familiar with
the theater history, trends, and elements of the major Asian theater forms. It
was then decided that a meaningful endeavor as a terminal requirement for the
subject is a useful hub for the benefit of theater scholars, academicians, and
enthusiasts. This online reference is both a display of the cumulative
knowledge that the students have earned throughout the semester, as well as a
convenient source of materials for research. It may also function as a guide
for students or even teachers of Asian theater as they go along the course. The
posts not only reflect the diversity of Asian cultures but also the
relationship of performances, values and beliefs, even lifestyles of a variety
of people from the East. This serves as a one-stop site with a display of
videos, photos, and brief descriptions that would provide necessary information
on the different theaters of Asia. It covers only representative theater forms
of the Orient’s entirety or even just in the particular country. However, the
initial pursuit for understanding the theaters of Asia, that is evident in this
project, may hopefully convince and persuade future students to engage in
similar efforts.
